Roller Coaster Investigation
THIS IS A PROJECT FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR. See Student text page 222 and Student Activity Manual pages 143-44 for instructions. Essentially what I want each student to do is construct a simple roller coaster using materials provided at school. You will receive 12 foot of pipe foam insulation and a marble. Design your roller coaster so that a marble can run the course that includes one complete loop. Record each trial until you are successful. Next for fun try other marbles and etc. Record your results.
Teams
You are allowed to team up with other students. Each team member will need to keep their own records.

ExamplesI added links to projects other students have created and posted to YouTube.
On the right a student shows how she designed her roller coaster.

On the left is a drawing of how to design your roller coaster. I would like for you to make measurements for each trial which includes the rise, the run and the size of the loop.
**BONUS POINTS ** Use the same designs with different size and weight marbles. You will need to include the size and weight of each extra marble. I have a scale at school that you can use Monday or Wednesday to weigh the marbles. On Wednesday we will discuss your results. **JUST FOR FUN** If you are working with other students combine your 12 feet of tubing with theirs and see what you can add to the roller coaster. Make a video or take pictures of the final project. |
