7th Science Chapter 5 - The Cell Cycle and Protein Synthesis
THIS IS ANOTHER RESOURCE FROM THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR AND WILL BE UPDATED FOR THIS YEAR. This chapter is short but there are a lot of processes and terms to master. The method I am using is basically hands-on with labeled illustrations, student created posters, lectures using illustrated board notes. Also there are video resources both on the student CD and from the internet.
We are spending three weeks on this chapter. I am covering the chapter material in class and adding outside resources to my three day a week sessions.

Evaluations
By the end of the study we want to be able to measure student learning, sometimes difficult. Probably the most accurate method is for a student to orally explain the main concepts using illustrations, similar to the manner of a teacher. Students will be required to do this on a limited scale using the two posters they will make.
Written testing is the next method of evaluation consisting of section quizzes and a chapter test. For this chapter I will be using two separate chapter type tests, the first to measure basic knowledge and the second to measure a students ability to explain the "big picture". The first will be multiple choice, fill in the blank and labeling illustrations, refer to weekly lesson plans for specific instructions.. The second is completely essay. An example of the second would be, "explain in your own words how a cell produces proteins. Limit your explanation to the material covered in Chapter 5 which is DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis."

How to Prepare for Evaluations
Of course the obvious answer is, study, study, study. What is completed and experienced in class is just a fraction of what needs to be accomplished outside of class. Students MUST spend time studying at home and preferably nightly.
To aid in mastering the material I have added study resources to Quizlet that include labeling illustrations. There are some resources on this site. To further prepare for the multiple choice, fill in the blank and labeling test you need to study the section reviews, the review at the end of the chapter, and illustrations in the book. Check weekly lesson plans for specific quizzes and or tests.
Student handouts can be accessed from this link and from a drop down link on top menu of this page. There are also Quizlet exercises.

SAT Prep
This year's version of the 7th Science textbook includes questions at the end of each chapter to help prepare students for the SAT. I may or may not have time to cover these questions. I suggest if you are concerned cover these at home. If you wish I will reward students with extra credit points.
